Developed on a lengthened Tiger II chassis, it combined extremely heavy armor with the powerful 12.8 cm Pak 44 L/55 anti-tank gun, giving it the ability to engage heavily armored Allied vehicles at long range. The enormous vehicle weighed roughly 70 tons and was powered by the Maybach HL230 engine. Its massive size, heavy armor, and large gun made it formidable, although its weight placed considerable demands on its engine, transmission, suspension, and mobility.

A small number of Jagdtigers were built with a Porsche-designed suspension system rather than the conventional Henschel arrangement. The Porsche system used externally mounted longitudinal torsion bars and paired road wheels, freeing valuable space inside the hull. Only a limited number of Porsche-suspension Jagdtigers were completed, and the vehicles equipped with this system were issued to schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 653. The unit had already gained combat experience with the Ferdinand/Elefant tank destroyer on the Eastern Front and in Italy before being re-equipped with Jagdtigers.

Jagdtiger 314, chassis number 305012, was the last Porsche-suspension Jagdtiger produced and was assigned to the 3rd Company of schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 653. By March 1945, the unit was fighting on the Western Front during the final stages of the war. The vehicle was involved in the fighting around Morsbronn-les-Bains in Alsace, where 3./653 came under Allied air attack. On March 16, 1945, P-47 Thunderbolts attacked the company with air-to-ground rockets. Jagdtiger 332 was hit, while No. 314 suffered transmission damage and became immobilized after running into a muddy bank beside the road. Its crew subsequently disabled the vehicle rather than allow it to fall intact into Allied hands.

The combat history of schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 653 extended across several major campaigns of World War II. The unit fought on the Eastern Front during the campaigns of 1943–44, participated in the Italian campaign, and later fought on the Western Front. Its Jagdtigers were committed during the Ardennes Offensive and subsequently took part in the fighting in Alsace and the final defensive battles in western Germany. The Porsche-suspension vehicles of the 653rd therefore belong to a very limited chapter in the history of the Jagdtiger, with only a handful seeing operational service.

This 1:32 scale model captures one of the most distinctive German armored vehicles of the final months of World War II.
