Why the Lamborghini LM002 became an icon
Long before high-performance luxury SUVs became common, Lamborghini created one of the most extreme off-road vehicles ever offered to the public. The production LM002 arrived in 1986 after the experimental Cheetah and LM001 projects. Its defining transformation was the decision to place the 5.2-liter V12 from the Countach Quattrovalvole at the front of the vehicle.
The result combined four-wheel-drive capability, enormous proportions and supercar-derived power with leather, wood trim and unexpected luxury. Lamborghini ultimately built only 301 examples, including the LM/American version developed for the United States. Its rarity and extraordinary engineering helped make the LM002 a cult favorite—and an early ancestor of today’s Super SUV.
Collector connection: Pair the LM002 with a 1:18 Countach to tell the complete story. The real vehicles share one of Lamborghini’s greatest signatures: the legendary Countach-derived V12.
